Description
Considered a ‘post-impressionist romantic’, Sosthène Weis (1872–1941) is one of Luxembourg’s finest painters. Influenced by the dreamlike views of William Turner and Michel Engels, whose pupil he was, Sosthène Weis enjoyed depicting views of Luxembourg’s old town with architectural accuracy bathed in gentle poetry.
The colours he used most were warm, particularly ochres, which we find in this watercolour depicting the very picturesque Rue du Rham in Luxembourg, a work dating from 1936.
