Description
In homage to Countess Ermesinde, Yvette Gastauer-Claire, sculptor and medalist, designed this exceptional sculpture, playing on the slender, ethereal and almost ghostly representation of the Countess as she appears on her seal. The artist sees it as a cocoon evolving inside the tower surrounding the City of Luxembourg, which she had chosen to appear on the first Luxembourg currency.
Born in 1186, Countess Ermesinde is considered the founder of the Luxembourg territorial state. She in turn freed the towns of Echternach and Luxembourg, issued the first Luxembourg currency, and founded the Abbey of Clairefontaine, where she was buried in 1247.
